4 Nights of JEW
Ended up seeing Jimmy Eat World 4 nights in a row. Unfortunately, the series of shows ended at Pepperdine. The best of the bunch by far was the Glass House. I just wish they ended with that show. Here's a brief recap:
Dec. 1 @ USC, McCarthy Quad. They played as part of the bonfire/rally before the USC/UCLA game. Great energetic show even though I was freezing my ass off (weak SoCal-an). Funny to see "cold breath" coming from Jim. Too bad the USC people trying to pep up the crowd...all they could say was "Fuck UCLA...we're #1, USC will win." I heard Will Ferrell would be there, but instead we got Wilmer Valderama (sp?) who seemed more interested in picking up chicks. Matt Leinart also made an appearance. And I think I blew out an eardrum being so close to the marching band. As soon as the band left, everyone started running to the barrier and craziness ensued. Even Jim told the crowd not to push so much. Crazy college crowd! But in a fun way.
Dec. 2 @ The Glass House. Amazing show! They should play all their SoCal shows there. So great to see GBSH back on the setlist. Some random stuff...Jim shouting the "YOU DONT HAVE TO SCREAM TO SAY SOMETHING THAT YOU OBVIOUSLY MEAN" part of No Sensitivity and Rick, Zach and Tom laughing. It was also great to see him rocking out directly to the people on Rick's side (my side) during Blister. He usually just rocks out around his mic. To my surprise, Zach handed me his drumsticks after the last song! I didn't even make any eye contact with him!! Everyone had their arms/hands out trying to get them, but he grabbed my hand and put the sticks in there. I guess he remembers me from bowling on his team??
Dec. 3 @ CalTech. When I first heard of this show, I thought "they're playing for a bunch of geeks?!?!?!" But wow, they were crazier than you'd think! Throwing a condom and bra on-stage! I don't think the organizer anticipated the crowd to be so wild so they only had short metal fences as the barrier in front of the stage. But there was crowdsurfing and moshing and lotsa pushing. Security had to keep pushing/holding on the "barriers" so that we wouldn't all topple over each other. Good times. This was actually a private show but my friends and I found a way to get in. They even served free food!
Dec. 4 @ Pepperdine University, Firestone Fieldhouse. Unfortunately I ended up being more concerned about my safety and health than actually enjoying the show. During the second opening band, a surge of pushing occurred and the barrier in front of the stage almost collapsed!! A girl broke her ankle and had to be carried away. During JEW, it of course got worse so they had to bring a bunch of security guards to keep the "barrier" up. The band notices the barrier swaying and it probably affected the performance. Jim mentioned it a few times during the course of the show, saying to be respectful of others and that we're all here to have fun. Not too sure if that helped. Extremely disappointing this is how it all ends. And they won't be back for a while since they're going to work on a new record!
