Epi-Lasik: 5 Months After - August 10, 2007

I'm listening to KROQ's Top 500 of the 90s and these songs are reminding me of times I'd rather wait another 10 years so I can recall them fondly like the 80s. Heroine Girl, Mother Mother (lame Tracy Bonham song), Shakespeare Sisters (!), I'm wondering when the Alanis Morissette songs are coming. I voted for Wonderwall, El Scorcho and damnit...can't think of the third song.

Been a while since I've written one of these. I had a 5 month appointment. Unfortunately since my last appointment, the hazing in my eyes hasn't gone away. My eyes are pretty dry due to the hot weather and I probably should go back to using Restasis regularly. My right eye is at 20/20 but my left eye vision hasn't improved. In fact, it's at -1 (was -11 pre-LASIK). Dr. Moore said if there's enough tissue left, she could do a correction on the left eye. WHAT?!?!?!?! I dunno if I wanna go through another procedure!! She said if I'm OK with my vision, we don't have to do anything. Being my procrastinating self, I elected to wait 3 months and see if the left eye vision improves. Since the appointment, I've come to terms that the left eye vision probably won't improve so I'm OK with doing a correction.

**Edit** Looks like Tiger Woods needs a corrective LASIK as well.

Epi-Lasik: Almost Two Months After - May 4, 2007

Allergies are killing me!! After 3-days of dry, dusty Coachella air, I can't stop sneezing or blowing my nose no matter how much Benadryl, Claritin, NyQuil I take. I'm gonna order a neti pot and see if that works before seeing a specialist. Demo video below. Don't laugh unless you've tried it!

I went for my 2-month post LASIK appointment. I'm seeing 20/20 through my right eye!!! I don't think I've ever seen 20/20 even with contacts and glasses! Still have hazing in the left eye. Dr. Moore said we'd have to just wait it out. Thanks to allergies, I've had no dry eye problem. Next appointment in 3 months. Epi-Lasik: Almost One Month After - April 5, 2007

Yesterday was the one-month check-up. The day before I felt some irritation in my left eye similar to when my gas permeable contact lens would irritate. It wasn't as bad as the irritation I felt a couple days after Epi-LASIK, but was still annoying. I started thinking that all the irritations I'd had when I wore gas permeable contact lenses were not the contact lenses' fault but the dry eye problem which I never knew about up until I started this whole LASIK process last year!

For a couple weeks, I'd been using Restasis to aid in my dry eye condition. But unfortunately, forgot to take my dosage the previous night and that morning. After the 30 minute drive from my office to the doc's office in addition to the waiting in the exam room, my eyes were quite dry--which is probably why the doc said my eyes were still dry. I said I'd been using lubricating drops at least every 30 minutes even when my eyes didn't feel dry and irritated. When I took the eye chart test, I noticed the vision in my left eye was actually sharper than the right! But due to hazing, the text had a shadow giving it a double-vision effect. I still couldn't read the letters on the 20/20 line. But if I'd actually took the time to focus on each letter and didn't have the tendancy to ramble off the letters in under a second, I probably could have read that line correctly.

Unfortunately, later at night, I seemed to have developed a sore throat. Took some ColdEeze and NyQuil. Gonna take some DayQuil in a few minutes after sucking down a sugar-free ColdEeze tablet.

As a side note...did you know you can make the text bigger on most Windows PC applications, by holding down the Ctrl-key and at the same time rolling the wheel on your scroll mouse down? Comes in handy when you can't read small text clearly.

I'm actually caught-up!! My next appointment is in one month. To read the other LASIK/Epi-LASIK entries, click here.

Epi-Lasik: Fifteen Days After - March 22, 2007

Two-week check-up. Doc said everything looked fine, but that I'll probably see "hazing" in the left eye for 4-6 months due to high degree of myopia. "Ack!! 4-6 months?!?", I thought. The hazing is only a problem when I have to read screens, books or magazines with small text. I sometimes I have to use a magnifying glass and enlarge fonts on my computer so I don't end up staring at a word until I figure out what it is. Doc says I can stop using the prescribed drops (Zymar and Pred Forte) and if I notice my eyes swelling to give her a call. She also remarked how much better my vision was. From -11 and -6 to almost 20/20. I said, yeah, I have no problems driving at night and I'd started reading books and magazines.

Epi-Lasik: Eight Days After - March 15, 2007

I went back to work earlier in the week. People kept asking about my vision, the procedure, etc. Work itself was OK. It was hard to read small text without a magnifying glass. From time-to-time, my vision would get blurry especially at the end of the day. From time-to-time my eyeballs felt like they were on fire, which I learned later was bad.

Had yet another appointment...this one a one-week followup. I had trouble doing the eye chart test, so the assistant gave me some drops to put in my eye and my vision remarkably cleared up. When the doc checked my eyes, she said they were really dry and she was surprised I could see through them. I said I had been using lubricating drops whenever my eye felt irritated and dry. She said by then, it's probably too late. Afterward, I kept putting drops in almost every 5 minutes! Since lubricating drops are quite expensive (like $12 for a one ounce bottle or 30 vials), I go on Ebay to see if I can buy them cheaper (I can).

Epi-Lasik: Four Days After - March 11, 2007

Had a 10am SUNDAY appointment. I was a bit worried Dr. Moore wouldn't show up on-time because of the early daylight savings time; however, her Durango arrived in the parking lot at exactly 10am! She took out the soft contact lens that was acting as a bandage, told me my eyes were healing nicely, and to stop using the Xibron drops and gave me Pred Forte steroid drops to use in its place. No...they do not make my eyes all buff, they merely reduce inflammation and swolleness. I was glad she gave me a bottle since that meant one less presciption to fill and pay for! She said I could start watching tv and go back to work the next day.

Later in the day, I finished The Time Traveler's Wife audiobook and did stuff on the computer. I could actually stare at the screen for long periods of time, but from time to time my vision would get blurry.

Epi-Lasik: Three Days After - March 10, 2007

Finally I go out in public! Ate at Claim Jumper with my brother, but I still wore sunglasses even though I was indoors. Got my usual parmesan crusted chicken, but skipped the raspberry white chocolate chip cheese pie I usually get there. Went to the nearby CompUSA since a bunch of their stores were closing but didn't see any real deals. I noticed my eyes weren't so sensitive around light which was a good sign.

Later in the day, I was actually able to watch TV. I was still struggling looking at the laptop even when I hooked it to my new 20" LCD computer monitor, but it wasn't as bad as the day before. And the irritation in the left eyes was mostly gone.

Epi-Lasik: Two Days After - March 9, 2007

Had a 9am appointment. I got to the office but the door was closed. Guess we were too early. Doc said my eyes were swollen, but that's normal. I mentioned my irritated left eye, and she said more treatment was needed for that eye (-11!) thus more irritation. Makes sense, I guess. She wanted to see me on Sunday (it was a Friday) and gave me instructions on how to spot her vehicle in the parking lot since the office building would be closed.

My left eye was still bugging the heck out of me so I mostly slept and listened to audiobooks. I started listening to The Time Traveler's Wife on my mp3 player. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt bought the movie rights?!

Later at night I notice on my Treo that someone bought a CD off me on Ebay (I had several listings at the time). Unfortunately, I noticed I mis-typed my PayPal address on all the listings!! I tried fixing the listings; but man, oh man, was it hard to look at the screen for more than 20 seconds at a time! And I kept cursing Epi-LASIK and myself for not transferring the Turbo Lister settings from my desktop to my laptop.

Epi-Lasik: The Day After - March 8, 2007

Went to my 10am follow-up appointment. I remember taking the eye test and noticing I was seeing double through my right eye which was normal as the surface of my eye was healing. Otherwise don't recall much about the appointment. Went home and took a shower. I'm not suppose to get any water in my eyes for a week so I had to be careful my face didn't come in contact with the falling water and used a washcloth to clean my face. Then took a nap. I probably tried to watch tv or use the computer but my eyes would get all watery and sensitive to the screen so went back to audiobooks.

Later that day, my left eye was irritating me. Kinda like when my gas permeable contacts would get irritated which probably would have bugged the heck out of most people. Actually it was bugging me because no matter how many lubricating drops I used for that eye, it never went away!!

Epi-Lasik: Day of Procedure - March 7, 2007

Start of my EPI-LASIK journal/experience...

I finally got LASIK, specifically Epi-LASIK. Unlike the conventional LASIK in which the recovery time is only overnight, Epi-LASIK's recovery time is 3-5 days and even now my vision isn't always clear. But supposedly it's safer because they don't cut into the cornea as deep since a surface treatment is done and is recommended for people with thin corneas or play sports where cornea injuries can happen. And a study show that in the long run, the results are better than regular LASIK. I found it useful to read other people's LASIK experiences so hopefully I can remember all that's happened!

Day of Surgury
I worked a half day, then I bought a bunch of frozen pizzas and junk food in preparation for several days of blinded recovery. Dad drove me the office. Resolved any outstanding payments at the front desk. You can tell it was surgery day since a lot of the people I normally see were in scrubs and there were people waiting to get their eyes done. Got prepped with eye drops, a shower cap was put on along with some cotton cloths of sort around my ears since a lot of eye drops tend to fall along the side. And before you know it, I'm taken to the cutting room...errr....operating room. I was lead up this high gray lounging table/chair. One of the assistants gives me a teddy bear as a stress reliever. It was some generic bear...wished it was Winnie the Pooh Pooh or Mashimaro. Some more prep. They put these plastic things to hold back your lashes and clamps to keep one of your eyes open. I was told to look up at the blinking light with the eye being operated on (right) while my left eye looks away. Gosh, that was hard to do! And I struggled.

As the surgeon was about to put some instrument to my eye, somthing rather surreal happens. Noticing something gone wrong, surgeon says, "I can't do this now." Then she says, "modern technology...the battery needs to be re-charged." So they take out the clamps, and plastic lash thingies and raise the chair. I'm told it'll take 25 minutes for the machine to re-charge and in the meantime they'll work on a couple patients. I think I must have waited an hour before they were ready for me. (side note, a couple days in the mail I got a couple pair of movie passes for the inconvenience). I go back to the OR, get on the operating chair again, plastic eyelash thingy and the clamps to keep your eyes opened are placed. None of this is painful by the way. So I see the blinking light yet again. I tried looking at it as much as I could.

Then that handheld instrument! My right eye wanted none of that! as it could not keep still. But eventually got my composure and my sight on that eye is blacked out. Not sure exactly what happened to it. I think something sunctions the eyeball and stuff is cut. No pain. I try too look away with my unoperated left eye. Then the instrument is taken off and I see the blinking light again. Then they zap ya! Lasers are shot like fireworks and an assistant counts down how many seconds left...45...30...15. I try to keep my right eye looking at the blinking light but it's so hard as I'm quite restless. I squeeze my teddy bear as it happens. Then it's over!! Lotsa drops are placed. A soft contact which acts as a bandage is placed on the eye. Then do the same procedures for the left eye. Since I knew what to expect, it went a lot smoother...well, except for the part where they put the soft contact in. For some reason, my eye wanted none of that!! So they had to have a couple assistant hold open my eye as the contact is placed.

Afterward, I was taken to an exam room and Dr. Moore examined my eyes. Was told to take the painkiller Lyrica as soon as I get home so I don't feel any pain. Reminds me when they told me the same thing when I got all my wisdom teeth pulled out. Given instructions as to the drops I'm suppose to use and given a nice case full of lubricating drop vials, sunglasses, and sleeping goggles. Before I left, they gave me a bottle of sparkling cider and told "Congratulations!"

Thankfully the sun had set when I got out of the office, but I wore the provided sunglasses as protection anyway. As soon as I got home. I took the Lyrica ASAP. I could see, but it was like seeing things under water. Decided it would be best if I did some non-sight activities. So took out my mp3 player with a few audiobooks loaded and prepared to nap. Even though I've already read The Wealthy Barber several years ago when I attended a UCLA extension class, I decided to listen to it since it didn't require long periods of concentration and attention a work of fiction would. Took some time getting used to sleeping with the sleeping shield and my eyes weren't quite watery. Woke up a couple hours later and nuked a frozen pizza.
